The business landscape here

Luna County is farm country with a border crossing at its southern edge. Its 213 farms sold $168.6 million in 2022, and the port at Columbus stays open around the clock for traffic from Puerto Palomas. Rodco Systems builds websites for Luna County businesses from El Paso, by video call and WhatsApp, and the useful split is between Deming, home to most of the county’s 25,407 residents, and everything outside it: the village of Columbus, the farms and the ranch roads across nearly 3,000 square miles.

Half of New Mexico’s chile

In 2024 Luna County harvested 2,490 of New Mexico’s 8,000 acres of chile and produced 26,005 of the state’s 52,000 tons. The 2022 Census of Agriculture counts vegetables, melons and potatoes at $71.3 million, more than any other New Mexico county, plus $48.3 million in milk. These are large operations: the average farm here covers 3,354 acres, and 36% of farms sold more than $100,000 that year.

Columbus and the crossing

Columbus is a village of about 1,500 people, 3 miles north of the port of entry on State Highway 11. In 2025, 437,511 personal vehicles carrying 894,151 people, 203,995 pedestrians and 16,638 trucks crossed north there, by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics count. CBP processes cargo on weekdays only, from 9:00 to 5:00 Mountain time. About nine in ten Columbus residents speak Spanish at home.

Pancho Villa State Park

The state park in Columbus covers the Pancho Villa raid, Camp Furlong and Pershing’s Punitive Expedition into Mexico in 1916 and 1917, with an exhibit hall and historic buildings. Puerto Palomas is 2.5 miles south of the park. Its calendar has three fixed dates that bring visitors into the village: Camp Furlong Day in March, Pancho’s Car Show in October and the Holiday Lights of Columbus in December.

A county that holds steady

The Census Bureau estimates 25,407 residents in 2025, within a dozen people of the 2020 count. About two thirds are Hispanic or Latino and about half speak Spanish at home. Median household income is about $36,400. On the July 2026 gross receipts tax schedule, unincorporated Luna County is 6.625%, against 8.25% in both Deming and Columbus.

The facts, with their sources

9 facts about Luna County, each linked to where it comes from.

Columbus, New Mexico, and its water tower, seen from a hill at Pancho Villa State Park

What that means for your website and marketing

  1. Columbus businesses sell to people coming north. With 437,511 personal vehicles and 203,995 people on foot entering at Columbus in 2025, a store, restaurant, clinic or service in the village needs a Spanish-first site, a clear map from the crossing, its own hours next to a link to CBP's port page, and WhatsApp as the first way to ask a question.

  2. Farm and packer sites are for buyers and crews. Luna County produced about half of New Mexico's chile in 2024 and its farms averaged about $791,000 in sales in 2022. A grower's site should give buyers and brokers what you grow, the season and a direct contact, and give seasonal workers a Spanish and English page that says when and how to apply.

  3. Rural customers need a service area, not a pin. Almost 9,000 people live outside Deming and Columbus across nearly 3,000 square miles. A contractor, well service or mobile mechanic should run its Google Business Profile as a service-area business and list the roads and communities it really covers, so it shows up for customers who live miles from any town.

  4. History brings the visitors, on set dates. Pancho Villa State Park holds Camp Furlong Day in March, a car show in October and holiday lights in December. Restaurants and lodging in Columbus and Deming should put those dates on their own sites and Google posts weeks ahead, in both languages.

Questions about Luna County

Do you work with businesses in Columbus?

Yes, by video call and WhatsApp, in Spanish or English. The free sample opens on your phone, and the reviews happen the same way. If the project needs a visit, for photos of your store or a look at a farm, we agree on it and write it into the quote before work starts. Rodco has no office in Luna County.

Should a Columbus business lead in Spanish?

In most cases, yes. About nine in ten Columbus residents speak Spanish at home, and the crossing 3 miles south brings customers up from Puerto Palomas. Lead in Spanish, keep a full English version for visitors to the state park and travelers, and make WhatsApp the first contact button.

Can my website show the port's hours?

It can, but link to the source instead of copying it. Customs and Border Protection lists the Columbus port as open around the clock, with cargo processing on weekdays only, 9:00 to 5:00 Mountain time, and vehicle exports from 10:00 to 2:00. Hours change, so a link to the CBP page plus a line about your own hours keeps your site from being wrong on a holiday.

I farm in Luna County. Who is my website for?

Mostly for buyers and workers, not for shoppers. Luna County's farms averaged about $791,000 in sales each in 2022, and the county grew about half of New Mexico's chile in 2024. A grower or packer site should tell a buyer what you grow, in what season and volume, and how to reach the person who sells it, and it should tell a seasonal worker, in Spanish and English, when and how to apply.

Which gross receipts tax rate applies outside Deming?

On the schedule the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department (TRD) published for July 1, 2026 onward, unincorporated Luna County is 6.625%, while Deming and Columbus are both 8.25%. TRD's general rule is that the rate follows where the work is delivered, with exceptions. A business that drives to rural customers should collect the job address on its quote form and check with its tax preparer.

Can you also build a site for a business in Puerto Palomas?

Yes. Palomas is about 2.5 miles south of Pancho Villa State Park, and we work with Mexican businesses in Spanish, by video call and WhatsApp. We can invoice in Mexican pesos or US dollars, and we write the aviso de privacidad your site needs under Mexican law for you or your lawyer to review.
