The business landscape here

Anthony is two towns with one name. Anthony, Texas belongs to El Paso County, Anthony, New Mexico to Doña Ana County, and the state line runs between them. Rodco Systems builds websites for businesses on both sides of Anthony, meets owners at their shop on either side of the line, and starts every site there: the same customer can live on one side, work on the other and shop on both, and the rules for your prices and your permits change at the line.

Two states, two tax systems

The Texas Comptroller lists Anthony, Texas at 8.25% total sales tax. New Mexico does not have a sales tax in that sense. It has a gross receipts tax that the business owes, that also covers services, and that TRD sets at 8.1275% for Anthony, New Mexico on its schedule for July 2026 to June 2027. Step outside city limits into the rest of Doña Ana County and the rate drops to 6.4975%. A website that prints one tax line for everyone is wrong for somebody.

Two ways to open a business

On the New Mexico side, the City of Anthony asks for a state CRS tax number first, then a business information sheet, and tells owners to allow 7 working days for review. Anyone selling food also goes to the New Mexico Environment Department’s office in Las Cruces. On the Texas side, restaurants fall under El Paso’s county-wide inspections, and their scores are public online. The City of Anthony, New Mexico itself is young: it incorporated on July 1, 2010. The Texas town incorporated in the early 1950s and was long known as La Tuna, after the federal prison nearby.

The first Texas mile of I-10

The City of Anthony, New Mexico describes itself as sitting on I-10 in the Upper Mesilla Valley, 27 miles south of Las Cruces and 21 miles north of El Paso. TxDOT’s Texas Travel Information Center is at mile marker 1 on eastbound I-10, at 8799 S. Desert Blvd., where counselors hand out routes and road conditions seven days a week. Anyone driving I-10 between Las Cruces and El Paso passes through Anthony, and drivers who do not know the town choose where to stop from what their phone shows them.

Spanish at home

The Census Bureau estimates 8,900 people on the New Mexico side and 4,539 on the Texas side in 2025. The American Community Survey puts Spanish at home at about 89% of residents in Anthony, New Mexico and 78% in Anthony, Texas, and close to half speak English less than very well. That is a different market from Las Cruces, 27 miles north, where English leads.

The Leap Year Capital

In 1988 the Anthony Chamber of Commerce named the town the Leap Year Capital of the World, and the Worldwide Leap Year Birthday Club is headquartered here. It is the kind of local story that makes an About page memorable, and the next February 29 is in 2028.

Anthony is about 21 miles from El Paso, so we meet at your business for the kickoff and the main reviews, on whichever side of the line you work.

The facts, with their sources

9 facts about Anthony, each linked to where it comes from.

What that means for your website and marketing

  1. Two tax systems meet on the state line. The Texas side charges sales tax (8.25% total in Anthony, per the Comptroller) and the New Mexico side charges gross receipts tax (8.1275% on TRD's July 2026 schedule), which also applies to services. A business that serves both sides needs quote and booking forms that ask for the job address and price pages that say 'plus applicable tax' instead of printing one number.

  2. Opening dates run on two different clocks. On the New Mexico side the City asks for 7 working days to review a new business, after the state CRS number, and food sellers also go through the Environmental Health office in Las Cruces. On the Texas side, restaurant scores are posted publicly by El Paso. Plan the launch so the website, the Google profile and the approval land in the same week.

  3. Anthony is the first Texas mile of I-10. TxDOT's travel information center sits at mile marker 1 eastbound, so every eastbound I-10 driver coming from Las Cruces passes it. A gas station, restaurant or tire shop near the interstate gets found on a phone at highway speed: the Google Business Profile needs exact hours, the side of the state line, and directions from the exit.

  4. Spanish leads here. About 89% of residents on the New Mexico side and 78% on the Texas side speak Spanish at home, and nearly half speak English less than very well, far more than in Las Cruces (about 7%). The Spanish version is the main site for most Anthony businesses, and WhatsApp belongs next to the phone number.

Questions about Anthony

Will you come to Anthony to meet?

Yes. Anthony is about 21 miles north of El Paso on I-10, so the kickoff and the main reviews happen at your business, whichever side of the line it is on. Between visits we check in by phone, WhatsApp or video.

My shop is on the Texas side, but a lot of my customers live in Anthony, New Mexico. Which tax goes on my prices?

That depends on where you sell and deliver, so confirm it with your tax preparer before the site goes live. For reference: the Texas Comptroller lists Anthony, Texas at 8.25% total sales tax, and New Mexico's Taxation and Revenue Department lists Anthony, New Mexico at 8.1275% gross receipts tax on its schedule for July 2026 to June 2027. Your website should not hard-code either number. We write price pages that say 'plus applicable tax' and quote forms that ask for the job address, so the right rate lands on the estimate.

I'm opening on the New Mexico side. What do I need before the website goes live?

A New Mexico CRS tax number from TRD comes first. Then the City of Anthony's business information sheet, and the City asks you to allow 7 working days for review. If you sell food, you also contact the New Mexico Environment Department's Environmental Health office in Las Cruces. We can build the site and your Google Business Profile during those 7 days and publish once the City approves you.

Should my Anthony website be in Spanish first?

For most businesses here, yes, or at least Spanish and English as equals. The Census Bureau's survey puts Spanish at home at about 89% of residents on the New Mexico side and 78% on the Texas side, and close to half of residents speak English less than very well. A Spanish version that is an afterthought loses the customers who matter most here.

I run a restaurant on the Texas side. Do customers see my inspection score?

They can. El Paso's public food-score site covers Anthony along with the city and the rest of the county, and 70 or above passes. A strong score is worth a line on your site and your Google profile. On the New Mexico side, food permits go through the state Environment Department instead, so the rules for a restaurant a few blocks away are different.

Anthony calls itself the Leap Year Capital of the World. Is that worth using?

As a story, yes, as a promise, no. The Anthony Chamber of Commerce gave the town that title in 1988, and the Worldwide Leap Year Birthday Club is based here. It makes a good About page line or a February 29 promotion. The next one is in 2028, so we would not build a page around it before then.
