The business landscape here
Las Cruces runs on institutions more than on storefronts. New Mexico State University, White Sands Missile Range, the hospitals and the government payrolls set the paychecks, and the Mesilla Valley’s pecan orchards and chile fields set the seasons. Rodco Systems builds websites for Las Cruces businesses in English and Spanish, driving up I-10 from El Paso to meet at your business, and that mix shapes who your site is for. More than a quarter of working residents draw a government paycheck and almost a third work in education, health care or social assistance, and the calendar follows the campus.
The campus sets the calendar
NMSU counted 16,678 students on its Las Cruces campus at the fall 2026 census, its third straight yearly increase, with another 7,661 at Doña Ana Community College. El Paseo Road runs 1.7 miles from Main Street to University Avenue, Downtown to campus, and the City has a redevelopment area along El Paseo and South Solano. If students are among your customers, your year starts with the fall semester, not on January 1.
The range and the spaceport
The Army puts White Sands Missile Range at more than 6,000 civilian employees and about 950 residents in on-post housing, so most of that workforce lives off the range. NMSU’s economists count federal and state government as base industries for the county, far more concentrated here than in the country as a whole. Spaceport America keeps its offices on Research Park Circle in Las Cruces, and an NMSU study credits it with 590 jobs and $183 million in output in Doña Ana County in 2024.
Health care draws from the whole region
Health care and social assistance is the county’s largest base industry, about 16,100 jobs by NMSU’s count. Memorial Medical Center says it serves more than 300,000 people across the region, and MountainView Regional Medical Center is a 168-bed hospital on East Lohman. Home health care is about four times as concentrated here as nationally, and providers take patients from the neighboring communities.
The valley’s farms sell beyond the valley
Doña Ana County grew about 65% of New Mexico’s pecans in 2024, 55 million pounds, and the state ranked second among pecan states. Chile is the other crop NMSU’s study names, with 1,960 acres harvested in the county in 2023. NMSU describes Las Cruces as the economic and geographic center of the Mesilla Valley, the farm belt along the Rio Grande from Hatch down to the west side of El Paso, and its growers sell locally and abroad.
Downtown, East Lohman and the mountains
The Farmers & Crafts Market takes over seven blocks of Main Street every Saturday from 8:30 to 1, year-round, with nearly 300 rotating vendors, and a smaller Wednesday market meets at Plaza de Las Cruces. The Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce works out of the restored Nestor Armijo House on East Lohman and runs ribbon cuttings, Leadership Las Cruces and a young professionals group. Ten miles east of town the Organ Mountains rise to about 9,000 feet. The monument’s visitor center is up University Avenue and Dripping Springs Road from I-25 Exit 1, which puts east-side restaurants and lodging on the road to it.
Who lives here
The Census Bureau estimates 116,978 residents in 2025, up about 5% since 2020 while the state as a whole grew less than half a percent. Six in ten residents are Hispanic or Latino, about 29% speak Spanish at home, and only about 7% speak English less than very well. Median household income is about $55,400. This is a bilingual market, not a Spanish-only one.
Las Cruces is about 45 miles north of El Paso on I-10, with the I-10/I-25 interchange on the west side of the city. That is close enough that the kickoff and the main reviews happen at your business, with video calls in between.

What that means for your website and marketing
Prices and quotes on a Las Cruces site need to say how they handle New Mexico gross receipts tax, and the rate usually follows where the work is delivered: 8.39% in Las Cruces and 7.94% next door in Mesilla, on the schedule TRD published for July 2026. If you pass the tax on, it must appear as its own line on the invoice, so booking and quote pages need a plain 'plus New Mexico gross receipts tax' note and estimates need the right rate for the job's address.
Las Cruces is a college town on a fixed calendar. NMSU counted 16,678 students on its main campus on September 4, 2026, plus 7,661 at DACC, and El Paseo Road runs 1.7 miles from Downtown to campus. If students are among your customers, back-to-campus offers and Google Business Profile updates need to be live in August, before the campus fills, not after.
Health care is the county's largest export industry by NMSU's count, so a clinic or home-health site competes for staff as well as for patients. With about 16,100 jobs, home health about four times as concentrated as nationally and providers drawing patients from neighboring communities, the site needs a real careers page and service-area pages for the towns you actually cover, not just 'Las Cruces'.
Most of the missile range's workforce lives off post. The Army counts more than 6,000 civilian employees at White Sands and about 950 people in on-post housing. Contractors, suppliers and the services a transferred family needs first (housing, child care, auto, dental) should have pages written for range employees and for families who just moved here.
Spanish here is for reach and trust, not necessity. About 29% of residents speak Spanish at home, but only about 7% have limited English, so a Las Cruces site leads in English and carries a full Spanish version, same depth, for the households where Spanish is the language at home. That is the reverse of Juárez, where Spanish leads.

Questions about Las Cruces
Do you meet clients in person in Las Cruces?
Yes. Las Cruces is about 45 miles north of El Paso on I-10, so we drive up for the kickoff and the main reviews and handle the rest by video and phone. There is no Rodco office in Las Cruces. We come to your business.
Do I have to show New Mexico gross receipts tax in the prices on my Las Cruces website?
That depends on how you bill, so confirm it with your tax preparer. What the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department (TRD) says is this: gross receipts tax is imposed on the business, it is common to pass it on to the customer, and if you do, it has to be listed separately on the invoice. It applies to services, not only goods. The Las Cruces rate is 8.39% on the schedule TRD published for July 1, 2026 onward, and rates can change, so the number on your site should be easy to update and should point to TRD's current table.
My customers are in Las Cruces and Mesilla. Does the tax rate on my estimates change?
It can. TRD's general rule is that the rate follows where the goods or the service are delivered, with exceptions such as professional services, and Mesilla's rate (7.94%) is lower than Las Cruces (8.39%). Your estimate or booking page should capture the job address, and your tax preparer can confirm which rule applies to your line of work. TRD's publication FYI-200 covers it.
I'm opening a business in Las Cruces. What do I need before the website goes live?
Two registrations, and the site can be built while you get them. The City of Las Cruces requires a New Mexico CRS number from TRD before it will register your business. The City lists its registration at $30 to $40, valid for 12 months and renewed by mail or in person. The City's business assistance line, (575) 541-2286, helps in English and Spanish. Your Google Business Profile can be set up alongside the site.
Should my Las Cruces website also be in Spanish?
For most businesses here, yes, as a full version rather than a translated page. About 29% of Las Cruces residents speak Spanish at home and six in ten are Hispanic or Latino, but only about 7% speak English less than very well. The Spanish version is not there because people cannot read the English one. It is there because the family making the decision often reads both, and a page written in their Spanish, not translated from your English, tells them you were expecting them.
Can a Las Cruces business show up for customers in El Paso too?
Rarely in the map pack, but it can in regular search results and in ads. Google ranks local results partly on how far the business is from the person searching, and El Paso is about 45 miles away, so your Google Business Profile does best near its own address. Reaching El Paso takes service-area pages written for El Paso and Google Ads with El Paso in the targeting.
I sell at the Saturday Farmers & Crafts Market. Do I really need a website?
A small one, yes. Nearly 300 vendors share seven blocks of Main Street every Saturday, and your regulars cannot find you on a Tuesday. A one- or two-page site with your booth location, what is in season and a way to reach you between markets (text, WhatsApp or a short form) means a regular who runs out midweek does not have to wait for Saturday to ask.
We're near NMSU. When should we start our promotions?
August. NMSU took its fall census on September 4, 2026, with 16,678 students on the Las Cruces campus, so by the first week of September the students are already here. Offers, hours and Google Business Profile posts need to be live in August, before they arrive, not after.
Where is the Small Business Development Center in Las Cruces?
At Doña Ana Community College, 2345 Nevada Avenue, Suite 101, (575) 527-7676, weekdays 8 to 5, with appointments encouraged. It is part of the New Mexico SBDC network, serves Doña Ana and Sierra counties, and its management consulting is free; some training courses carry a small fee.
