The business landscape here
Alamogordo sells to two crowds that most towns its size never see together: military households posted to Holloman Air Force Base, and travelers on their way to White Sands National Park. Rodco Systems builds websites for Alamogordo businesses from El Paso, working by video call, and that split decides what each site has to say. The Census Bureau estimates 31,906 residents in 2025, up about 3% since 2020, which makes Alamogordo by far the largest town in Otero County.
Holloman sets the turnover
Rep. Gabe Vasquez’s office said in July 2023 that Holloman directly employs over 5,000 people and supports about 1,700 more jobs, with more than $420 million in earned income, and the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce calls the base the largest employer in the area. The Census Bureau counts about 9.5% of Alamogordo residents age 16 and up in the armed forces. Those households move in and out on orders, so every year a new group of customers is choosing a dentist, a mechanic, a landlord and a place to eat for the first time, usually from a search.
The dunes bring the visitors
White Sands National Park is about 15 miles west of town on US 70. The Park Service counted 729,096 visits in 2023 and estimates those visitors spent $44.5 million in nearby communities, supporting 595 local jobs. The park closes now and then for missile tests on the range next door, and on several nights from June on it hosts free Full Moon Night concerts (the entrance fee still applies). In town, the New Mexico Museum of Space History houses the International Space Hall of Fame and a dome theater and planetarium. Oliver Lee Memorial State Park and its Dog Canyon trail are 8 miles south on US 54 and 4 miles east, against the Sacramento Mountains.
The tax line at the city limits
On the schedule TRD published for July 1, 2026 onward, the gross receipts tax rate inside Alamogordo is 8.1875%. Out in unincorporated Otero County it is 6.25%. For a business that sells across the county, that is a difference worth getting right on every estimate.
Who lives here
About a third of residents are Hispanic or Latino, about 12% speak Spanish at home and about 2% speak English less than very well. Median household income is about $55,950. NMSU Alamogordo counted 1,135 students at its fall 2026 census, a small campus next to the base and the park.
Alamogordo is 82 miles from El Paso up US 54. That is far enough that we work by video calls, with a visit written into the quote when your project needs one.

What that means for your website and marketing
Part of your market is new every year. With close to one in ten adult residents in the armed forces, a steady share of Alamogordo customers arrive on orders and leave on orders, and they find you on Google before they know the town. The site and the Google Business Profile have to answer a newcomer's questions: where you are, what you accept, how soon you can start and how to reach you from out of state.
White Sands visitors decide on a phone, the same day. The park drew 729,096 visits in 2023 and sits 15 miles west on US 70, so a restaurant, motel or shop on that route needs current hours, a menu or rates, photos and directions on Google Maps, plus a page that loads fast on a highway signal. When a missile test closes the park, those visitors suddenly have an afternoon free in town, and a current page of things to do near you is how they find you.
The town line moves your tax rate by almost two points. Alamogordo is 8.1875% on TRD's July 2026 schedule and unincorporated Otero County is 6.25%, so a contractor or mobile service that also works out in the county should quote by job address and say 'plus New Mexico gross receipts tax' on its price pages instead of printing one rate.
Lead in English here. About 12% of residents speak Spanish at home and only about 2% have limited English, far less than in Las Cruces or Deming. A full Spanish version pays off for specific businesses, such as clinics, law offices and family services, rather than as a default for everyone.

Questions about Alamogordo
Do you meet clients in person in Alamogordo?
Not as a routine. Alamogordo is 82 miles from El Paso by US 54, so the kickoff and the reviews happen on video calls, and you can open the free sample on your phone. If your project needs someone on site, to take photos or walk a property, we agree on the visit and write it into the quote before any work starts. Rodco has no office in Alamogordo.
A lot of my customers come from Holloman. What should my site do for them?
Answer the questions people ask in their first week in town. The Census Bureau counts about 2,400 Alamogordo residents age 16 and up in the armed forces, close to one in ten, and many of them start searching before they arrive. Say plainly where you are, what you accept (insurance, pets, short leases, whatever applies to you), how fast you can start and how to reach you by text or form from another time zone. Those answers belong on the site and on your Google Business Profile.
What gross receipts tax rate goes on my Alamogordo invoices?
Inside city limits it is 8.1875% on the schedule the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department (TRD) published for July 1, 2026 onward. Outside the towns, the rest of Otero County is 6.25%. TRD's general rule is that the rate follows where the goods or services are delivered, with exceptions, so a business that works across the county can charge different rates on different jobs. Confirm your case with your tax preparer and keep the rate on your site in one place that is easy to change.
Is it worth going after White Sands visitors?
For a restaurant, a motel, a fuel stop or a shop on the way to the park, yes. The Park Service counted 729,096 visits in 2023 and says those visitors spent $44.5 million in nearby communities. The park is about 15 miles west of town on US 70. Most visitors choose where to eat or sleep from a map search on their phone, so your Google Business Profile, hours and photos carry as much weight as the website itself.
Do I need a Spanish version of my Alamogordo website?
Not always. About 12% of Alamogordo residents speak Spanish at home and only about 2% have limited English, which is very different from Las Cruces or Deming. Most businesses here can lead in English. A Spanish version earns its place when a real share of your customers asks in Spanish, or when you run a medical, legal or family service where people want the details in their first language. We will tell you which case you are in.
Does NMSU Alamogordo matter for my marketing?
Less than the base does. NMSU Alamogordo counted 1,135 students at its fall 2026 census, down from 1,215 a year earlier, and it does not swing the town's calendar the way the main campus does in Las Cruces. It matters if you hire part-time staff or sell to students, and in that case a careers page and student offers posted in August are enough.
